The Gift of Sight
Daly City Host Lions Club provides eye care to individuals in need in our community through our White Cane Fundraising.  White Cane funds are raised exclusively for eye care.  We are proud to have provided eye screenings, eye examinations, and glasses to over 1,000 individuals since July 2009.  We are proudly participating in an effort to do vision screening on  children in our community with the use of a vision screening camera.  In addition, Daly City Host Lions Club is a supporting member of Lions Eye Foundation of CA NV providing free ophthalmic examinations, operations, and medication to those in need.

Lions Recycle for Sight
In just about any dresser drawer, one can find a pair of eyeglasses that are no longer being used. That same pair of eyeglasses can change another person’s life.  That’s why Daly City Host Lions Club supports Lions Recycle for Sight. Throughout the year, Lions, Leos and other volunteers collect used eyeglasses and deliver them to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers (LERCs).  LERC volunteers clean, sort by prescription strength and package the glasses.  Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact. Over 15 million individuals in 67 countries have received the gift of sight since 1987 from the California LERC – LIONS IN SIGHT, Vallejo CA.  Daly City Host Lions have collected just over 44,000 pairs of glasses since 2009.
How You Can Help – If you have used eyeglasses you no longer need, you can donate them now.  Lions accept prescription and reading glasses, sunglasses and plastic and metal frames.  Children’s glasses are especially needed. Contact us to donate through Daly City Host Lions Club or visit www.lionsinsight.org

Lions International Peace Poster Contest
Each year Daly City Host Lions Club joins Lions clubs around the world to proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in our local schools.  This art contest encourages young people (ages 11, 12, or 13 on November 15) worldwide to express their visions of peace.  More than four million children in 100 countries have participated in this contest.
Each school has a first second place winner and two honorable mentions.  Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. The first place winner from each school is submitted to our District 4-C4 (San Francisco, San Mateo County, and Palo Alto) for consideration; the District 4-C4 winner is submitted to our Multiple District 4 (California); with the Multiple District 4 winner competing globally.  Twenty-four international finalists are selected each year; the Grand Prize winner received $5,000.00 and a trip to a special award ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations (date subject to change) with two family members and the sponsoring Lions Club’s president; each of 23 merit winners received $500.00 and a certificate of appreciation.  Please click here to view 2016-2017 Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest Winning Posters.
The theme for 2018-19 was “Kindness Matters”.

Flag Days
Each February Daly City Host Lions celebrate Lions Clubs International Flag Days by educating children in our local schools about the United States Flag and the meaning of patriotism. Students in Daly City schools participate in a 30 minute presentation focusing on the history and significance of the United States Flag.  Each student receives a small flag and an informational pamphlet.

Student Speaker Contest
Each year Daly City Host Lions Club participates in Lions Club International Multiple District 4 Student Speaker Contest.  Students grades 9 through 12 are eligible to compete with a prepared talk on a specific topic no less than five minutes nor more than ten minutes in a competitive public speaking event.  Each Lions Club in each District is given the opportunity to sponsor a Student Speaker Contest and award $100.00 to the winner and $25.00 to each finalist.  Winners at the Club Level compete in the Zone Level, usually three to five club winners, for an award of $150.00 to the winner.  Winners at the Zone Level compete at the Region Level, again three to four competitors, for an award of $250.00 to the winner.  Winners of the Region Level compete at the District Level, up to four competitors, for a award of an $4,500.00 scholarship.  The District winner competes in one of four Area Contests where each Area Contest winner receives a $6,500.00 scholarship.  Each of the four Area Winners compete in the Final Contest where the winner receives a $10,000.00 scholarship.  Scholarships are provided by Student Speaker Foundation.

Don Riker Recycling Fund
When Lion Don Riker joined Daly City Host Lions Club in October 1981 he wanted to make a difference so he started to recycle aluminum cans to raise money for Lions Eye Foundation, Ear of the Lion, and club community projects with a goal of raising $5,000.00.  By August 28, 1985 Lion Don Riker had coordinated the collection of 10,000 pounds of aluminum, raising $3,100.00.  Lion Don Riker continued to work on this project until his death in April 2006 – 85,514 pounds of alumunim was collected, raising $50,070.00.  The project was named in his memory and we continue to collect alumunim (and plastic bottles) to support our efforts to serve our community.  If you would like to contribute, please email us to arrange pick up of your cans and bottles.
